Campaign Director: Marketing & Communications

Spirit of America (www.spiritofamerica.net) is a nonprofit that seeks an amazing and energetic talent to lead a marketing and communications campaign this Fall. The campaign will generate donations to support the American troops with whom Spirit of America works in Afghanistan. The campaign will remind the public that there are still 68,000 men and women serving in Afghanistan, and it will ask people to support Spirit of America to help make US troops safer and more successful. The campaign will focus on generating donations of small amounts (e.g., $10 through text to give). The campaign is not intended to advocate any position regarding US policy in Afghanistan. Our point is that as long as the US has troops in Afghanistan, we -- the American people -- should help make them safer and more successful.

Our campaign director will report to our CEO and will be responsible for:

  • Managing the campaign and all its elements (see below).
  • Developing/refining campaign messaging and creative.
  • Managing creative consultants, designers.

Campaign elements are expected to include:

  • Extensive use of social media
  • Poster(s)
  • Blogads
  • Video(s), hopefully viral and user generated
  • Crowdsourced creative
  • Outreach to related communities of interest
  • Public relations
  • Newspaper ad (one page)
  • Television PSA advertising
  • Mobile giving ("text to give")
  • Micro site

QUALIFICATIONS
Spirit of America is a small, highly-entrepreneurial organization. You must be an experienced doer and a manager -- as comfortable making creative contributions and decisions and pitching the media as you are managing creatives and Spirit of America team members. You must have a demonstrated ability to produce results in a short period of time. You are someone who lives their life online: completely familiar with all the ways we can use social media and the Internet to achieve our goals. Ideally, you will have a connection to and/or affinity for our troops serving abroad.

All the skills everyone lists in CraigsList jobs are also important here: outstanding written and verbal communication skills, ability to collaborate and fit with a highly-motivated team and so on. The skills of someone who has excelled on a fast-moving political campaign are more relevant than a corporate marketing campaign that took 8 months to plan and 12 months to execute.

We see this as a full-time gig for two months. We are looking for someone who believes in the mission of this campaign and who is willing and able to go "all out" to create amazing results. The position could grow into a permanent position.
