Metal Detectors to Help Save Lives

US Army helps Afghans find bombs and IEDs

Afghan police standing next to an IED (Improvised Explosive Device)

Afghan police in Zhari District, Kandahar Province, are running constant patrols to help curb the insurgent threat and keep their homes and families safe. Unfortunately, these brave officers do not have all the resources they need to accomplish this task effectively. The US Army unit that works alongside the policemen told Spirit of America that they lack any way to detect the improvised explosive devices and mines that are strewn throughout the district by Taliban fighters; additionally, they do not have the means to thoroughly search vehicles that pass through their checkpoints, a problem that leaves them vulnerable to vehicle-borne IEDs (car bombs). This lack of equipment has resulted in severe casualties, especially during the intense summer fighting season.

With your help, Spirit of America can provide metal detectors and search mirrors to help protect these officers on the job, thereby improving the security situation and keeping our troops safer as well.
