Iraqi Orphans Project
Helping children in greatest needIt is estimated that in Baghdad alone, there are 5,000 orphaned children scavenging the streets daily to secure food and a safe place to sleep. While looking only for what they need to endure another day, they are being strongly recruited into the terrorist networks that oppose a new democratic Iraqi State. Ignored and left to fend for themselves, with no hope for education or good instilled values, many will inevitably slide toward destructive activities.

About Iraqi Orphans Project
Spirit of America is concentrating on providing shelter, food, clean water, clothing and educational material for these orphaned children. Currently there is no systemic official organization that takes care of orphans in Iraq. We are working with a small group of very dedicated men and women in Baghdad and Basrah to provide these necessities to an initial group of 150 orphans. The Iraqi Orphans Project seeks to:
- Provide housing, food, clean water, and clothing.
- Provide funds to renovate a building that houses orphans.
- Provide funds to allow the children to participate in educational programs.
- Provide means for individuals in the U.S. to foster the "Lakeet child." ("Lakeet" is a child in Iraq who is considered illegitimate. They are unable to get into many of the orphanages due to society’s regard of their illegitimacy. They are ideal candidates for recruitment by the terrorist networks currently flourishing in Iraq.)
