Sewing Machines For Women in Ramadi

Putting economic power in women's hands

In 2004, Spirit of America responded to the request of the 1st Marine Division asking to help women in Ramadi by providing sewing machines for centers being established by the Province's director of economic development. Through the generosity of our donors and friends, SoA was able to respond to that request by providing 100 machines.
In March of 2006, we used proceeds from this project to purchase sewing machines to be used in the same capacity for the
Women's Center project in Fallujah. SoA will continue to support programs of this type by responding to continuing requests under our Women's Centers project page. Thank you for supporting this initiative which has blossomed into the concept of the multi-use Centers which will give Iraqi women a place to learn, meet and communicate with each other and the world.

The Request
The 1st Marine Division asked if we could help women in Ramadi by providing sewing machines for centers being established by the Province's director of economic development. The sewing centers, include day care, and provide women in the area with the opportunity to earn a living - some for the first time.
We delivered the first 50 machines and they were used in a ribbon-cutting opening ceremony of the women's sewing center. We then provided 50 more machines for the next phase of the project.
The bulk of these machines will be going to Sewing Centers being set up by the Director of Economic development. These centers will employ women to do piece-work in order to provide poor Iraqis affordable clothing. We will provide the machines and some seed money with the intent that these centers be self sufficient in about 3 months. Thereby giving women a chance to make a living, as well as make clothes for themselves and their families.
You can help, by donating above.
Even if you just buy a bobbin, it helps!

Major General Jim Mattis – Commanding General of the 1st Marine Division - emailed us about our donation of sewing machines. "The sewing centers are getting good use and more are planned. We should see a lot of very beneficial impact as the word of these spread. While the first one in Ramadi is well attended, I am surprised at even greater anticipated use in smaller, less affluent areas. Thank you and your team again." Semper Fi, Jim
