Help Army 1LT Jason Karluk Brighten the Future for Iraqi Kids

1LT Karluk and his Aunt Lori Jean want to give children basic tools of learning

We first heard about First Lieutenant (1LT) Jason Karluk's interest in reaching out to help Iraqi kids through his Aunt Lori Jean. 1LT Karluk, who is serving his 2nd tour of duty in Iraq, enlisted his Aunt's help in finding organizations who could help to send items such as school supplies, soccer balls and small toys for local children in these remote Northern towns which haven't been a focus for Civil Affairs outreach. 1LT Karluk shared that "the future of Iraq lies in the education of its children. We owe it to them, and to the hundreds of American men and women who gave their lives to bring them freedom, to give these children the basic tools of learning."

Please Help Our Troops Help Others

1LT Jason Karluk works with Civil Affairs during his last tour in Iraq
"Many American soldiers have taken it upon themselves to help the Iraqi children. Working in small groups on their days off, soldiers gather school supplies and toys sent by family members and church groups, sometimes coming under fire as they work to reconstruct the schools and deliver learning tools to Iraqi kids. The need for help is so great and so widespread, encompassing some 1,500 schools, that their efforts cannot possibly answer the entire problem, but every time school supplies or toys are delivered by our troops it is another small victory for them in helping to win the hearts and minds of the Iraqis. The future of Iraq lies in the education of its children. We owe it to them, and to the hundreds of American men and women who gave their lives to bring them freedom, to give these children the basic tools of learning. Toys are also a great way to communicate with the Iraqi children and build trust." --Message from 1LT Jason Karluk stationed in Northern Iraq.

"We can use anything you can send because it's basically humanitarian assistance/building rapport with the locals. The area I'm in isn't the friendliest...so these items allow us to go in and show we're not just bringing death and destruction..." Army 1LT Jason Karluk, Mosul, Iraq
