Operation: Provide Classroom Comfort

SoA and Virginia Tech partner to provide educational necessities to Iraqi school children

While Major Mark Sherkey was stationed in Iraq in 2003, he realized that providing for the education of children was a key piece of the puzzle in completing their mission. Through friends, family and colleagues, Major Sherkey was able to provide over 2,000 Iraqi children with 2,500 pounds of school supplies donated by generous Americans in 26 states. This outreach to the local population helped to create an umbrella of protection around Sherkey's unit.
Now that he is back in the States, Major Sherkey wants to help duplicate the success of the first Phase of Operation Provide Classroom Comfort for those men and women who are currently on the front-lines in Iraq fighting for hope for the next generation..and you can help!

Winning the Hearts & Minds of Iraqi School Children

Spirit of America is honored to partner with Major Sherkey and the Virginia Tech Iraqi Outreach Committee (VTIOC) to make a real difference in the lives of Iraqi schoolchildren. Those of you who follow our work regularly know that school supplies are one of the most frequently requested items from the troops and civilians who call to use for help in the fight for freedom, democracy and a better future--for Iraq and America. The supplies collected at the Virginia Tech vs. Boston College game on October 27th will be distributed by Army and Marine units throughout Iraq.
Many schools in Iraq have been destroyed or damaged and those that are operational have to deal with limited resources and supplies. Adequate education is an essential cornerstone to building a future of freedom and opportunity for Iraq. Your contribution to this mission will insure that a child in Iraq will have access to the tools needed for a successful school year and share the message of friendship between our two countries.
